Common questions

Questions we hear every week

If any of these sound familiar, that's exactly what our free online check is for.

Do I need private or statutory health insurance as a foreigner?

It depends mainly on your employment status and income. Employees below Germany's statutory income threshold are usually required to have statutory insurance (GKV); above it, and for freelancers and civil servants, private insurance (PKV) often becomes an option — sometimes the better one. Our free online check walks you through this in a few minutes.

Incoming insurance or full PKV — which do I need for my visa vs. residence permit?

Applying for an entry visa from abroad usually calls for incoming insurance; a long-term residence permit requires full German health insurance (GKV or PKV) instead. See the full breakdown.

Can I switch from incoming insurance to full private cover later?

Not automatically — incoming insurance and long-term GKV/PKV cover are separate products. Once you're applying for a residence permit, you'll need to switch to full German health insurance, so it's worth planning that transition ahead of time.

How does my income affect which insurance I can choose?

Your income largely determines whether you're required to have statutory insurance (GKV) or free to choose private insurance (PKV). The relevant threshold changes periodically, so it's worth checking your current eligibility rather than relying on a number you read somewhere.

What happens to my insurance if I change jobs or become self-employed?

It depends on which system you're in and what you're moving to — some changes are straightforward, others, like leaving PKV, are hard to reverse. This is exactly the kind of situation worth checking before you make a move, not after.
